Cape Town pro-life activist gets another summons days before court date

Resolute Christian pro-life activist Peter Throp has been issued with another summons by the City of Cape Town — this time for parking his so-called ‘pro-life mobile’ outside Marie Stopes abortion clinic in Bree Street, Cape Town on Tuesday morning (March 4, 2014).

BREAKING NEWS: The Cape Town High Court today (Friday, March 7, 2014) upheld an appeal by Christian pro-life activist Peter Throp against a conviction in February last year for damaging property by placing pro-life stickers over illegal abortion stickers. The City of Cape Town hounded and threatened him for months, and the Mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, ignored his appeal for them to rather join him in protecting women from the illegal abortionists. In February, 2013, a Cape Town magistrate sentenced him to a fine of R5 000 or 3 months imprisonment suspended for 5 years. See statement released by Throp after the Supreme Court upheld his appeal.

The latest move by the City to curb Throp’s anti abortion campaigning came just days before his appeal hearing in the Cape Town High Court tomorrow (Friday, March 7) against his conviction, in February 2013, for damaging municipal property by placing pro-life stickers over illegal abortion stickers. In that matter a Cape Town magistrate fined him R5 000 or three months imprisonment suspended for five years.

In this week’s summons, the City says that it inspected his car in front of Marie Stopes at 6.30am on Tuesday, and found that he has contravened Section B of the Outdoor Advertising and Signage By-Law because he has not obtained written approval for the pro-life signage on the vehicle. The signage includes the statements ‘Abortion is evil’, ‘Value Life’, ‘Silence on abortion is not golden, it is yellow’, ‘Expose lies, lift up truth’ and ‘Isaiah 5:20 “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil…” ‘.

Legal advice
Throp says he has sought legal advice regarding the latest summons. However, he observes that his intensive daily weekday prayer campaign in front of Marie Stopes has been running for just three months short of four years, during which time he has made more than 900 trips to the clinic.

“It has been a good run for the ‘truth’. Maybe God wants to give me a new strategy so that the unborn can be heard, because right now, with the appeal tomorrow, and what I have witnessed, there are a lot of people, Christians included, who just want that right to kill. They are so blind and living in darkness that they don’t want to relate to the extent of the killing.”

Graphically describing the horror of the abortion procedure in which babies are legally killed, he comments: “As you can see,  it’s all very sad for me.” An estimated 1,2 million babies have been legally killed by abortion in South Africa since 1997.

It is likely that this week’s action against Throp by the City of Cape Town follows a complaint against the clinic which has a track record of calling law enforcement authorities when pro-life prayer vigils and pickets have been held near its premises.

Speculating on the latest notice served on his vehicle, Throp says  it “seems to have something to do with ‘third party advertising” because I park it outside the clinic every morning until 9 am. The powers that be seem to want to classify it from a ‘vehicle’ to a ‘transit’ sign. However, I have got to wait for the Advocate to look at the By-law very closely. It means that all the advertising on the taxis and delivery vehicles are acceptable, but because mine carries me to the clinic and is parked there with me, it loses its ‘vehicle’ status under clause 64 of the By-law.”

The notice orders Throp to remove the signage from his vehicle or stop parking in front of Marie Stopes, failing which court action may be taken.

KMMC needs prayer partners for 40-days and other campaigns

kmmcprayerMen and women are needed to participate in the 40-days-of-prayer-for-the-Karoo-Mighty-Men-Conference-2014 which kicks off on Monday, March 17.

Prayer is the backbone of the KMMC and the committee calls on Christians everywhere to get involved in the strategic 40-days campaign by contacting Ruthi at info@karoommc.co.za or at 079 947 3566 / 049 8423310 or by completing the form at the bottom of this webpage: http://karoommc.co.za/prayer

Participants in the 40-days from Monday, March 17 to Friday, April 25, will receive a daily update, via email or WhatsApp, with specific prayer requests and the names of the men – 100 names a day — registered for the conference. They are asked to set aside a time each day (even if only 5 minutes) to pray individually, or with others, for the KMMC and the men who will be attending.

Prayer team volunteers are also needed to join in other prayer initiatives that will be running in the lead-up to the fourth annual KMMC on Renosterfontein farm near Middelburg from April 25 to 27. The other campaigns are:

21 Days On-Site Intercession - This will be a continuous prayer action that will take place on-site on Renosterfontein farm over a 21 Day period from April 5 to April 25. The committee is requesting teams (two or more people) to take a day (or more) to spend at the farm in continuous prayer. The Renosterfontein homestead will be available as the central prayer point and there are facilities for teams to overnight as well. Once the committee have the names of everyone they will coordinate dates to fill up all of the slots.

Prayer during the KMMC 2014 Event - This is the prayer action that occurs in the ‘Intercession Tent’ during the course of the event, the event prayer will be starting on Friday, April 25 and will continue until Sunday, April 27th. The committee is looking for individuals or teams who are prepared to set aside an hour (or more) to come and pray in the tent, with all the latest prayer information available.

The intensive prayer strategy is testimony to the KMMC ethos of being founded, grounded and prepared for through prayer. Indeed, even the decision to hold the KMMC in the first place was established through prayer.

Mighty Men Conference founder, Angus Buchan reminds us in his book The Booth that the Lord Jesus Christ never did anything without first praying to His Father in heaven for guidance and direction.

“The disciples often couldn’t find Jesus – He was always up the mountain, waiting on His Father. But when He came down, all heaven broke loose: The sick were healed; captives set free; miracles, signs and wonders took place,” says Buchan.

Andrew Murray, in his book With Christ in the School of Prayer, says that when we learn to regard prayer as the highest part of the work entrusted to us – the root and strength of all other work – we will see that there is nothing we need to study and practice more than the art of praying.

“We know that the fervent faith-filled prayers of righteous men and woman are powerful and effective (James 5) to transform lives, heal the sick, set the captive free, and bring people into right relationship with God and man,” says Dave Turner, one of the local organisers of the KMMC, who is a farmer in the Middleburg district and a lay pastor in a local church.

He says prayer is the power behind the KMMC and every decision concerning the conference is committed to the Lord in prayer.

“We are therefore sending out an urgent request to ask people to partner with us in prayer and intercession for KMMC 2014.

“We need a mighty army of people praying and interceding that God will do an awesome work in our midst.

Creative baby safe ministry saving lives

In South Africa, it’s not uncommon to find dead babies in plastic bags at the local dump. It usually happens about twice a month, according to Operation Mobilization.

“The babies that are found are usually in buckets, old tires, or containers,” Patience Maselela told OM last February. Maselela has been working at the Mamelodi City Dump for the past 20 years. Each year, city dump workers discover the discarded bodies of over 100 newborns.

Through the help of a local church and a generous donation, OM South Africa’s AIDSHope team opened a “baby safe” last summer, giving women a safe alternative to abandonment or abortion.

Now OM is stepping back so the community can take more ownership of this initiative.

“To me, the best part is that we took the initiative from God to help the process so that the community can take ownership,” says AIDSHope leader Alma Leonard. “This is what makes it sustainable. God has transferred this passion for hope and life from us to the community!”

According to Operation World, nearly 40 million people in South Africa, or 75% of the total population, claim to be Christians. However, “the post-Christian worldview has center stage in the media,” and moral evils abound.

Some 5.7 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, and half of South Africa’s population lives below the poverty line. A large percentage of middle school students–adolescents between the ages of 12 and 14 years old–are sexually active.

This is the demographic OM’s AIDSHope team is targeting with an awareness campaign sponsored by The Ford Motor Company. Ford supplied posters and flyers as well as staff to help the OM workers talk to women and girls at abortion clinics and schools.

“We have the unique opportunity to talk about making good life choices to pupils in grade seven at four local schools,” said an AIDSHope worker. “So far, our main focus has been on HIV prevention, but we realise that our focus must be wider.

“We have to talk about what to do if an unwanted pregnancy occurs, and we have to offer alternatives to aborting or abandoning a baby.”

An abandonment alternative
A designated room at the Bophelong Community Centre functions as the “baby safe.” Desperate mothers are encouraged to take their infant inside the centre instead of just dropping their child off and leaving. This creative approach to the “baby safe” concept allows mothers to receive biblical counseling and support, and the child’s important medical information can be collected.

Babies are then taken from the community center to ABBA House, a baby shelter in Pretoria that seeks to find a loving family for each child. In some cases, workers can connect distressed mothers or parents with vital resources.

For example, one set of parents desperately wanted to keep their child but felt they had no way to care for her. They thought the best option was putting their daughter up for adoption, so they brought her to the baby safe.

But after speaking with counsellors, these parents were connected with a social worker, ultimately enabling them to keep their child. So far, eight newborns have been saved through OM’s campaign and the baby safe.

‘Christian Friendly Products’ a South African non profit company that has developed a Christian alternative to Halaal labeling on products, held its official launch in Port Elizabeth on Saturday (March 8, 2014).

The Christian Friendly Products label.

The company wants suppliers to display its label on their products rather than Halaal labels which currently appear on more than 50% of SA food products and help to finance the spread of Islam, said co-founder Etienne de Jager. He said the small royalty fee for displaying the CFP label will be used to support Christian mission organisations such as OM, Open Doors, Egeiro Ministry and INcontext Ministries.

“To make this Christian trademark a success, we need the support of churches, Christian organizations and Christians in business. You can support us through prayer, by sharing this knowledge with your friends and family, by bringing your business on board and also by supporting businesses that carry the logo,” said De Jager. He urged Christians to visist CFP’s website at www.christianfriendlyproducts.com and to like its Facebook page.

First supporter
The first business to support the initiative is Homemade Blessings in Kuils River, which displays the CFP label on its range of food products.

Speaking at the launch event at Hoogland Dutch Reformed Church during a city men’s prayer meeting to intercede for Egypt, De Jager said Islam poses the biggest threat to the church. He said Muslims make up about 2% of the South Africa population but that through Halaal labels the Christian majority contributes millions of rands a year to the spread of Islam, including the building of mosques, madrasses (Islamic schools) and Daw’ah (Islamic mission).

He said the Scripture, John 6:27. which reads:“Do not labour for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” played a key role in his inspiration to develop an alternative, Christian label.

“God allowed this verse to take root in my mind. Sometimes it is good to allow a verse to simmer for a bit or brew like good coffee in your spirit to get the aroma out. The words “food , Son of Man, His seal” stood out for me. Excitement started to build within my spirit. I thought: What if an alternative symbol exits on products? A symbol that honours God by honouring Christ , the One who carries his seal of approval. A trademark with one sole purpose: enriching the Kingdom of God,” he said.

World waking up
De Jager said: “It is encouraging to see how God is waking up the world on the issue of halaal. Some videos are available on
our Facebook page that show how Australia, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands are now realising, just as South Africa is doing, what the halaal trade really means.”

One of the videos he refers to cites a 2010 newspaper report in Pakistan in which The Grand Mufti of Bosnia Herzegovina, Dr Mustafa Ceric is quoted as urging the Muslim Ummah to conquer the world through the Halaal movement as Halaal means pure and hygiene and non-Muslim world has no hesitation to accept it.

According to the report, Dr Ceric told a reception hosted by the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) that the Halaal movement has the strength to lead Muslims to rule the global economy as the food and other services are the basic need of every human being.

Rain, rain, rain…but Mighty Men Joburg managed to shine

The first Mighty Men Conference Johannesburg tested Victor Lemmer and his team’s faith and determination as it rained non-stop for 10 days before the event, creating havoc with their preparation of the campsite on open land south of the city.

“We needed to cut the grass that was 1.2m tall and we just never had a chance. We could not scrape the roads and with all the rain the road just got worse and worse. We needed to build the showers but we could not do anything in preparation for this event,” he said.

Then at 4.30pm last Wednesday, just over a day away from the start of the event, Dawie Liebenberg, one of the MMC committee members, took the committee to an equestrian centre not far from their waterlogged campsite. The centre has an indoor arena that can seat 1 500 people.

mmcjburg1“We spoke to the owners and they said we could use it with pleasure. Everything just started working out and things started falling into place,” he said.

Lemmer said the MMC, from Friday, March 7 to Sunday, March 9, was “the most amazing event”. The first campers arrived at 8.30am on Friday. That evening Danie Botha led the first session, taking the MMC to “a new level”.

“It was so uplifting and afterwards 29 guys gave their lives to the Lord,” he said.

“Even through the rain, the guys just kept on coming in. Although we were only 224 guys on the Friday we just experienced His [God's] presence all the time.

“On Saturday Afrika Mhlophe was magnificent. The reports that we received on Afrika’s session were great. That afternoon we worshiped with Arno van Wyk, and the anointing was incredible. The Lord called on guys who felt that this conference was their last resort and they were in a hole and did not know where to turn to. 23 guys came forward and the Lord spoke to each one of them and filled them with His Love and Spirit.

mmcjburg3“Then Francois du Toit ended Saturday Evening for us with an awesome message. Sunday was for the whole family and Franna Benade wrapped it up telling us stories through worship and the Word. The whole weekend Louis Brittz and Franna Benade and their Band took us to new spiritual Levels with their awesome worship.”

Lemmer said the experienced team from the Karoo Mighty Men Conference supported him and his team “from the word go” and only left late on the Sunday afternoon. He was also blessed by the support, prayers and encouragement of the convenors of the Karoo MMC and Bushveld MMC, Jannie Moolman and Francois Brits, respectively.

“To Angus Buchan, Ronel, Bruce and Jilly from MMC Headoffice, for your input, support and prayers – thank you. We could not have done this without you guys. The support was just amazing and everybody just pulled their weight. The MMC Joburg Committee was just great and with very little sleep we pulled through. What a great bunch of guys!”

Lemmer said the committee received a testimony from Gieljam Johannes Roux, one of the neighbours of the MMC Joburg campsite. He said:”To each and every man that attended the MMC Joburg – You guys are amazing!! I was skeptical when I was informed that the MMC will be held literally next to my plot, but you guys really restored my faith in the men of our country….Proof that good men are still around!!”

mmcjburg4Commenting on what the faith journey meant to him, Lemmer said: “We serve an awesome God. What a journey. Dealing with all the challenges made me realise again that this event was never in our hands. This event was God’s event from the start and we are so blessed to have been part of it. I believe that faith is not something that can be underestimated and I know that organising this event, we walked on water and every time we lost focus we started sinking, just like Peter did In Matthew 14: 29-31. And every time this happened the Lord Lifted us out of the water.

“I know that we serve a living God and He just showed every man during this weekend that he wants us to be the Prophet, Priest and King of our families.”

Lemmer confirmed that there will be another MMC next year. But he said the name of the event will change to MMC Gauteng.

NMB Church leaders declare war on abuse of political power

The Church has an important role to play in a “new struggle” in South Africa against the abuse of power by elected leaders, say Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Church leaders.

In a strongly-worded joint statement ahead of the May 7 national election, the church leaders “give notice” of their intent to “become more assertive as the church” in the NMB metro and to “encourage other sectors” to join in the struggle on behalf of society as a whole.

“We do note that much has been done in the past 20 years to address the needs of our people, but that which was done that is good has been overwhelmed by the tsunami of systemic corruption and maladministration which is robbing our people of their future and their dignity.

“Government is not meeting the expectations of our people and the role of the church has become more important than ever,” says the statement.Referring to the former struggle against apartheid, the church leaders say there is now a “struggle against corruption, maladministration and incompetence that contributes to lack of service delivery, education, health and unemployment”.

Responsibility
“We believe that the church has a role and responsibility to guard ordinary people against abuse of power and to be an active force in the pursuit of a more just and inclusive society,” they say.

Broad areas of concern highlighted by the leaders are an excessive concentration of power in the hands of a power elite that has rendered them untouchable and unaccountable; the mariginalization and passivity of other spheres of society including business and civil society; centralization of political power that promotes self-serving leadership and local communities; and political interference in the work of watch-dog agencies.

“We intend becoming more assertive as a stakeholder in this city and we believe that systematic, coherent and well-informed action by all non-political agencies of society will be in the interest of all. Thus, we will seek and promote constructive partnerships towards joint action for a better society,” says the statement.

The leaders say all Christian denominations in the Metro are being mobilized “into a force that could make a real difference in the quality of life of people. Our action will be organized within the Ward system and we will work with communities and their leaders to identify the real issues and to enable appropriate action.”

Accountability
“We as a church will keep governance of our city accountable to the Integrated Development Plan, the Budget and measure the deliverables accordingly. Our key objective is accountability.

“We have already started our action by enhancing our knowledge and those of our communities with good quality information to improve insight, awareness and the quality of the collective conscience of our communities to become more resilient, pro-active and self-reliant. We will actively work towards strategies and plans to promote socio-economic development at a community level throughout our Metro,” they say.

The joint statement is signed by:
Bishop Lunga ka Siboto: Presiding Bishop of the Ethiopian Episcopal Church
Bishop Bethlehem Nopece: Bishop of the Diocese of Port Elizabeth of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa
Bishop Musi Losaba: Bishop of the Grahamstown District of the Methodist Church of South Africa
Pastor Neville Goldman: Senior Pastor Ebenezer
Reverend Danie Mouton: Executive Director: DRC Eastern Cape
Pastor Patrick Douglas-Henry: Regional Leader of AFM Church in Eastern Cape
Archdeacon Zwelidumile Tom: Secretary of Metro Council of Churches & Convenor of NMBCCC
Pastor Mvusi Gwam: Chairperson of Transformation Christian Network.

wordridersOn Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 10:00 a group of 45 motorcyclists and their support team will leave Bible House in Bellville for the fourth annual Word Riders tour.  This tour takes place under the auspices of the Bible Society of South Africa.  This year the weeklong tour will meander through the Little Karoo (Montagu, Ladismith, Oudtshoorn), along the Garden Route (Knysna, Hartenbos) and ends at Struisbaai on March 29.

The first day’s shift will take them via Franschhoek and Villiersdorp to Montagu and during the week, towns such as De Rust, Hartenbos, Knysna, Albertinia, Swellendam, Bredasdorp and Struisbaai will be visited.

The tour, however, is not just about an enjoyable motorbike ride. Bibles are also taken on the trip and these Bibles will be distributed to Grade 7 learners at rural schools along the route. Most of these children cannot afford a Bible of their own. This donation is made possible by the Bible Society’s Bibles for Grade 7 learners project as well as funds that were raised by the bikers themselves.

In 2011, when the King James Bible celebrated its 400th anniversary, eight motorcyclists decided to celebrate this event by travelling to deep rural areas in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to give Bibles to Grade 7 learners.  This was the start of the Word Riders tour.

The event is also used to create awareness for the work of the Bible Society. The touring group will attend church services in Montagu, Barrydale and Ladismith on Sunday, March 23.

A special breakfast has been arranged at the Let’s Go Bowling Italian Restaurant at George on 26 March at 07:00.  Rev Gerrit Kritzinger, Chief Executive Officer of the Bible Society, will be the speaker at this event. More information is available from  Willem Botha at 083 338 0389.

Those who would like to learn more about this tour or who would like to become involved with the Bibles for Grade 7 Learners project can contact the Bible Society. More information is available from Mims Turley on 083 255 5765 or biblia@biblesociety.co.za. Every R40 the Bible Society receives helps towards giving a child in need an Outreach Bible.

Readers cab follow the tour on the Word Riders blog www.wordriders.wordpress.com as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

Leaders of the Christian Police Association (CPA) of South Africa who met at Floradale, outside Bloemfontein, last weekend, aim to make a difference in their colleagues’ lives by sharing the love of Jesus.

Policemen and -women from eight of the nine provinces in SA attended the CPA Leadership Seminar from March 13 to 16. The delegates who come from different churches and cultures noted that members of the South African Police Service are in dire need of spiritual help, motivation and support due to an extremely negative work environment in which they are physically, emotionally and spiritually worn down on a daily basis. This leads to all sorts of social and personal problems, it was noted.

The CPA, which views itself as a spiritual family within the SAPS family rather than an organisation, believes it can make a difference in the lives of fellow colleagues. Police members have a hunger for real and true hope that is only found in Jesus Christ, they say.

members from the eight different provinces including our national management and provincial representatives.

CPA members from the eight different provinces including national management and provincial representatives.

The Leadership of the CPA aims to share the love of Christ with colleagues this year by means of support through prayer, motivation and inspiration. They also want to build bridges between local communities and police stations in various provinces.

The CPA is also involved in uplifting children in less fortunate circumstances as well as in Christian ethics training, which is also presented in 52 other countries worldwide.

The CPA celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and wants to give all the glory to God for many wonderful testimonies that have surfaced since its inception. The CPA will host its 20th annual national congress in September in Pretoria.  National Christian Police Associations from Australia, England, America and other parts of the world have already confirmed their attendance. The congress will be a weekend of praise and worship with the theme:   “Jesus, the only Way”.

More information about the CPA can be obtained by calling the National Office in Bloemfontein at 051 – 430 8774 (work) or 082 542 7234.

The fourth annual Mighty Men Conference in the Bushveld on Snymansdrift farm outside Polokwane takes place next weekend (March 28 to 30) and farm owner Francois Brits says he and his committee are more excited and expectant than ever that God will reveal his love and mercy powerfully to each man who sets aside the time to focus on Him.

Explaining why entrance to the 3-day event is free for the first time this year, Brits says that during his quiet time God showed him that this was His will for 2014. Like Gideon, he twice asked God to confirm His will and God replied affirmatively with two scriptures — Isaiah 55:1-3 and Luke 9:3

Brits encourages all men in Limpopo to come to the MMC Bushveld for a time of spiritual refuelling.

“Please bring along as many friends as you can so their lives can be touched in the same way as many thousands of men have experienced in the past,” he says. As this year’s event will be held during the Easter holidays, he urges all fathers to bring along their sons on the Friday and Saturday before the MMC is open to women and children on the last day of the event on Sunday, March 30.

The main speakers will be Riekert Botha and Piet Jacobs and praise and worship will be led by Franna Benade and Joe Niemand.

The organisers have promised that plenty of food stalls will be available, camping facilities will be free of charge and basic ablution facilities will be available to everybody attending the event. There will also be plenty of MMC memorabilia on sale and those not wanting to camp overnight will be granted free access for the day.

The organisers are hoping to better the turnout of 4 200 people who attended the MMC in the Bushveld last year. Further infromation can be obtained by calling Francois Brits on 082 460 2540 or Hercules Erasmus on 082 719 6953 or by visiting the Mighty Men Conference website at www.mmcbosveld.co.za.

The Anglican Primate of Southern Africa has spoken out against clergy who attacked South Africa’s Public Protector for suggesting that the country’s president benefited unduly from state money.

The Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, came in for the criticism from the priests the day before her report – which looked into US$23 million-worth of spending on President Jacob Zuma’s rural residence – was released.

In a statement released on March 18 to global media the Most Revd Dr Thabo Makgoba said, “We in the Churches deeply regret that certain clergy have ganged up against the Public Protector in the name of the Church. They have done so without adequate knowledge of her reports, and their intervention only serves to undermine the fight against corruption.”

The Public Protector’s office in South Africa is mandated by that country’s constitution to, among other things, investigate, rectify and redress any improper or prejudicial conduct in state affairs while “ensuring fair, responsive and accountable public sector decision-making and service delivery.”

“It is shameful to see the dirty tactics being employed by politicians against the Public Protector,” the Archbishop continued. “There is clearly a co-ordinated campaign by those implicated in her reports to denigrate her office and its work, which threatens to undermine the legitimacy of an institution established and protected by our constitution.”

Archbishop Makgoba instead welcomed the Public Protector’s reports on corruption and mismanagement and thanked her for making the country accountable and transparent. He said her office’s work “helps to develop our democracy” and called on all civil society to join the Churches in “defending the office against the current assault.”

Last week, a group of religious leaders also attacked the Public Protector for her probes into the chief operating officer of the country’s public service and commercial broadcasting organisation, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as well as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The Public Protector in South Africa is appointed by the President, on the recommendation of the National Assembly, good qualifications and must have a reputation for honesty and integrity.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega.

South African Police Service employees gathered at multiple venues in all nine provinces yesterday (Wednesday, March 26) morning to participate in the third annual SAPS National Prayer Day.

The theme of this year’s event was Moving forward in 2014 as one by seeking God’s face through praise and worship. Attendance at the services was voluntary.

Addressing a Prayer Day gathering in Pretoria, National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, said the task facing SAPS is huge and requires them to “acknowledge our limitations before God and seek His intervention in our lives”.

She introduced the following topics for intercessory prayer at the event:

  • The SAPS management
  • Police members and their families
  • The reduction of crime
  • Crimes against women and children
  • The end to police killings
  • The SAPS’s priorities for the new financial year
  • Unity among SAPS members in marching towards the goal set for the SAPS
  • Government
  • Upcoming elections and the spirit of tolerance.

“To all the religious leaders across the country, continue to lead us with dignity. As we gather here let us spread the message of collaboration, democracy and peaceful coexistence in our organisation and country at large. Programme Director, let me also take this opportunity to thank all South Africans who are praying for us, praying for healing and harmony. It is my wish that we all remember the Marikana tragedy responsibly and sensitively and once again pray for total reconciliation. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing,” she concluded.

Awesome Karoo Mighty Men experience inspires man to sponsor 10 buses from the Cape

The bus trip between Cape Town and the KMMC was part of the great experience of the KMMC 2013 for these men. (PHOTO: Andre Stoman Photography)

Last year the Karoo Mighty Men Conference (KMMC) hosted a group of 50 men from the Cape Peninsula, who travelled to the meeting in a single bus. This year an expanded group is planning to attend the KMMC consisting of 600 men who will arrive in 10 busses.

The organiser of last year’s group (who wants to remain anonymous) is subsidising the cost of the bus trip which will cost men only R100 including food for the weekend at the KMMC. He says although it was the first time he had attended a Mighty Men conference in 2013, he will not miss another KMMC.

“I have never experienced the presence of the Lord or felt His Spirit as I did at KMMC 2013.

“I woke up in the early hours of Saturday morning wondering what it was that had awakened me. Walking outside of my tent I found that it was a group of men praying around a cross.

“The whole weekend was one of close communion with both the Lord and fellow conference goers. People were greeting and praying for each other even though they were formerly strangers.

“It was great to be in such a peaceful and joyful environment, among so many men whose sole aim was to give God glory and build their relationships with Him.”

He says it is difficult to describe the experience of being in such a harmonious environment; the stillness and space of the Karoo is also a wonderful place to worship the Lord.

However, it was not only the KMMC that was such a rewarding experience, the bus trips to and from the conference were equally enjoyable.

“The friendships made, the prayers shared and the worship together on the bus was amazing with people singing and laughing spontaneously and in a spirit of unity even though we were of different ages, from different church denominations, different races and different parts of the Cape.

“The trip back to Cape Town was even better, because we had so many testimonies and experiences to share.”

Godfrey Sadziwa was also a first-time attendee at the KMMC 2013, confirms the richness of the experience, both on the bus and at the conference.

He said: “It changed my life. The speakers at the conference seemed to be speaking about my life and directly to me.

“Before, I was only part a man; today, I am a real man, a responsible man who has better relationships with both my family and the Lord.

“Previously, I would make all decisions by myself. However, I now only make decisions after spending time with the Lord and consulting with Him.”

Sadziwa said attending the KMMC was the fulfilment of his dreams.

“It was good for me as a person and I enjoyed it. I made friends whom I am looking forward to seeing again this year.”

Buses will be travelling to KMMC from different starting points in the Cape including Cape Town, Hermanus, Moorreesburg, and Worcester. For more information contact Janine at 072 0154 881 or visagie_janine@yahoo.com .

Holiday trip to Lesotho became an ongoing Bible mission

Pastor Siphiwe and his wife at the church at Sani Top – 27 December 2013 – he handed his last bible out and prayed for bibles for weeks, we passed his church on our way to St James and stop to see what we can offer them on our next visit, we gave 5 bibles to him.
A 65-year-old man receiving his first Bible from Eben Grobler and Benita Grobler (background) at the church at St James, Lesotho.

A Despatch family is heading back to Lesotho next month with 500 Bibles after their lives were changed forever during a trip last year in which they handed out 50 Bibles in a remote mountain village. Next year they plan to return with 5 000 Bibles.

“It started as a small holiday trip, but then reality struck us like lightning,” said Eben Grobler, relating how deeply moved he, his wife Benita, and their children, Chantelle, 17 and Ivan, 12, were when they discovered the great hunger for Bibles among the people they encountered and the many people in the area who do not have Bibles.

When they gave a Bible to a 65-year-old man he knelt in front of them to thank them. He said it was his first Bible and he had been asking God for one for years. Eben said the man’s faith boosted their own faith to keep on praying for God to heal Benita from pain she has suffered for years as a result of a minor operation that went wrong.

“To be honest. When I tell people about our project it feels like God is taking control of me. Sometimes I really get carried away and after a few minutes I realise that the person who I am talking to has tears in his or her eyes. Only then do I realise that God is working in that person’s life now. How fortunate I am to be able to tell the story and be part of His great work. Suddenly our whole life gets a different meaning and we just want to do more for Him,” he said.

The Grobler family in Lesotho: what started as a holiday trip developed into an ongoing mission. The family members are (from left) Chantelle, Benita, Ivan and Eben.

The Grobler family in Lesotho: what started as a holiday trip developed into an ongoing mission. The family members are (from left) Chantelle, Benita, Ivan and Eben.

Grobler said he gave his life to Jesus in Grade 8 and had further experiences at school, in the army and when he joined the Fire and Emergency Services in 1990, that deepened his walk with the Lord. Then he met and married Benita, who shared his love of God. Two months before they were married doctors told them she would not be able to have children — but she was pregnant a month after they married.

“At the age of 30 I told Benita that I would love to go on a bike trip for my 40th birthday. At 38 our life changed when a small operation on my wife went bad and she lost the use of her arm partially. After 12 operations and a lot of money I realised that my dream was not going to finalise due to money constraints. What I never realised was that God had a bigger plan for me, and also for the rest of my family.”

He said that after he attended a church service in Despatch about missionary work, God told him that if he committed himself to taking Bibles with him on his 40th birthday, He would make sure that he had a motorcycle by that time.

“Now this may sound strange and like a negotiation session with God, but I want to make it clear that it was not the case. The commitment came clearly from God,” he said.

Motorcycle trip
God faithfully provided an old motorcycle in 2010 and after doing some work on it, it was ready for a big trip. Grobler and two friends rode to Lesotho where they gave away 30 Bibles at St James village in a mountainous area about 70km from the Sani Pass. Having established the need for Bibles in the area, Grobler returned with his family and 50 Bibles in 2013. This time they travelled by 4 x 4 and the big idea was to show his family where he and his friends had been by bike. But the focus of the trip changed when God touched their hearts about the need for Bibles in the area. They committed themselves to adding another 0 to their 50 Bibles and to returning in 2014 with 500.

He said that due to her health problems Benita had been declared temporarily medically unfit for work. The Bible project has given her “a new purpose in life”, he said. It has also given an opportunity to others to share in the project by donating a Bible or contributing towards the project and knowing that they are changing people’s lives for ever and giving people an opportunity to go to heaven.

He said they have collected their 500 Bibles — 400 in English and 100 in Sesotho. Any further Bible donations received now will be put towards the 5 000 needed for 2015.

Tea with a difference
Recently on Benita’s birthday she had a “tea with a difference” in which she asked her friends not to bring her gifts but to bring food for the Lesotho Mission. She received 400 items of food.

“We are now busy collecting stationery, beanies and blankets as winter is very cold and temperatures can be minus 15. The travel and accommodation is for our own account! We will travel in three 4×4 vehicles — our family, the Bekker family and two friends Morne Grobler (he did the bike trip in 2010) and Werner Doubell!”

The team will depart for Lesotho on April 25.

Grobler said: “We would like to thank everybody who contributed to making this mission possible. This is not a ‘Grobler’ family project. Every person that makes a contribution forms an integral part of the project itself. We do this for the glory of God and to further His Kingdom!”

Table Mountain Challenge will help trafficked women and children

tablemountainchallengePeople of all ages and fitness levels are invited to join the Freedom Climb Table Mountain Challenge from October 7 to 12 to help raise awareness and funds to combat human trafficking.

Groups of people from various nations will stand up for vulnerable and enslaved women and children around the world by hiking, running, or riding up the scenic mountains of Franschhoek and climbing Table Mountain, Cape Town, or by praying at the foot of the mountains. The Table Mountain Challenge, which will tie in with ‘Human Trafficking Awareness Week’ in South Africa (the first week of October), includes four days of activity and interactive information sessions. The event will culminate on Saturday, Oct 11, with climbing Table Mountain and a closing ceremony of intercession for those involved in exploitation.

Participants can choose the challenge that suits their preference or fitness level. Options are the Fitness Challenge (hike, trail run or mountain bike ride), Family Challenge (easier family hike and special programme for children), Disabled Challenge (hiking options for people with physical disabilities), Adventure Challenge (for paragliders and motorcyclists) and Prayer Challenge (intercession for thos involved in activities of exploitation).

Funds raised during the event will support OM prevention, rescue and rehabilitation, and development projects around the world.

“The climb is symbolic of what many women and children around the world go through every single day—their arduous climb to freedom. When we stand on the top of the mountains, we will be declaring life and freedom for those who cannot speak for themselves. The Freedom Climb offers a very specific way to make a difference through prayer, awareness, and funding for projects that fight the battle to remove this deep stain on all of humanity head on,” say Freedom Climb, a project of OM, which is organising the events.

Prospective participants can register online. The cost is R2 500 per individual registration (food and accommodation included). Additional required fundraising is R10 000 (or more) per individual entry and R5 000 per adult and R1 000 per child for family entries. The idea is for participants to get people to sponsor them.

Call to fast and pray for elections

electionprayerSouth African Christians are urged to participate in a second call for 40 days of focused prayer for the elections from April 1 to May 10, says Pastor Laurette Mkati, prayer coordinator of the SA Prayer Movement for Change.

The first call was from March 1 to April 9. The second call, which includes fasting, includes the day of voting, counting the ballot and announcing results.

She says not everyone is expected to fast the 40 days, although those with a burden and a grace to do so are urged to do so. Churches, prayer groups and intercessors in the nation are asked to share the fast days through the 40 days.

There are, however, two corporate fasting seasons of three days each, in which SAPMG is asking all Christians to fast and pray. The corporate fasting days are April 7 to April 9, and May 5 to May 7.

“There is great power in united prayer and even greater when we add fasting,” says Mkati.

Various resources are available to help Christians pray strategically for the elections. These include the SAPMG Prayer Strategy Document, a Prayer Guide from the Insitute of Christian Leadership Deveopment (ICLD), a Jericho Walls Prayer Pointers.

Another resource, highlighted by Mkati, is a General Elections Conversation Guide that has been prepared by ICLD to help people think through their decision before the voting day. This guidecan be obtained by contacting Mathie on 082 561 3512 or by emailing info@icld.co.za.

In a prayer letter this week, Mkati says it is now the month when Israel celebrates Passover — “an excellent month for us as South Africa to tap into this prophetic season of deliverance from oppression, as we did 20 years ago when God delivered us from the oppression of apartheid”.

Likening South Africa’s experience over the past 20 years to that of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness with the promised land before them, she says: “It is time for us to raise up a cry until there is a Moses company, who will take deep times in prayer with God to get His pattern for the building of this nation according to His specifications (Psalm 127:1), a Joshua generation who will mobilise the royal priesthood, the church of Jesus Christ, to take up the ark of His presence and the rod of His authority, step into the troubled waters of our communities, and lead the people into the promised. A generation willing to fight, not against flesh and blood, but principalities and powers of darkness, especially the New Age/Illuminati, who have seduced the government of our nation and established their wicked agenda causing us to rebel against God through our secular humanist constitution and legislation that directly contradicts God’s word. A generation who will not keep silent day or night before God (Isaiah 62:6-7) or before the people of South Africa (2 Chronicles 30:6-9) until we have returned to the Lord and forsaken our wicked ways. Then our God will hear our prayers, forgive our sins and heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).”

Vlooi hits the long road to celebrate his rebirth at the KMMC 2013

After 59 years of living in darkness, Theo (Vlooi) Terblanche stepped into the light when he was born again last year at the Karoo Mighty Men Conference (KMMC).

This week Vlooi is embarking on a 500km “Celebration Journey” on foot from his home in Plettenberg Bay to KMMC 2014 to glorify the Lord’s name and praise God’s grace by which he was saved a year ago.

(Vlooi) Terblanche.

Theo (Vlooi) Terblanche.

Furthermore, Vlooi is undertaking this walk of faith without seconding support, back-up vehicles or sponsorship. The 500km walk will take him from Plettenberg Bay through Uniondale, Willowmore, Aberdeen, Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg to KMMC 2014.

“Although I was brought up in a Christian family and even became a deacon in a church, as an adult I fell into a life of alcohol abuse, criminal activities and unfaithfulness to my wife,” says Vlooi.

“It got so bad that I became an alcoholic, was using prostitutes; my family life was almost non-existent with one daughter turning her back on the family and the other two losing all respect for me,” he adds.

Invitation
Then some friends invited Vlooi to join them on a trip to KMMC 2013.

“I wasn’t keen, but eventually conceded to go, in spite of a frivolous attitude and only because they said it would be a camping weekend in the Karoo and I could take alcohol with.

“However, I had no idea, nor could I have imagined in my wildest dreams what God had prepared for me.

“By the time we drove through Uniondale on the way to the KMMC, I was already drunk and stopped the car to buy more alcohol for the rest of the trip. After arriving at Rusoord Farm on the outskirts of Middelburg and setting-up our tents I had a few more drinks to fortify myself before we went to listen to the first speaker.

“At first I found it a bit strange, because so many men were lifting their hands in praise of the Lord as they were singing and some were even speaking in tongues. I was unused to both practices as they were not done in the church in which I had been brought-up.

“Nevertheless, that night of the 28th April 2013 I had the most miraculous experience when I accepted Jesus Christ as my saviour, gave myself to the Lord, and was reborn in a Damascus Road-type incident, which turned my life around,” explains Vlooi.

He says it all happened within seconds and he was immediately freed from being a slave to addictions.

Poured out alcohol
“On returning to the tent I poured out all my alcohol. I felt that I was now resting assured in the arms of my Saviour, Jesus Christ.

“When I returned home I asked my wife to forgive me, admitted to sexual and criminal misconduct and apologised for how it had broken our home and the negative effect it had on our family.

“To my relief she accepted my repentance instead of divorcing me,” says Vlooi.

“I can truly say that night at the KMMC Lord Jesus Christ freed me immediately from the darkness and evil that robbed me of righteous living and the love of my family. My life was healed from depression, dishonesty, lies, profane and vulgar language.

“When I arrived home my youngest daughter immediately sent me an SMS saying how happy she was to have a father again and how much she had missed me.”

Vlooi says that although there is still much work to be done repairing his family’s relationships, he trusts that God will finish the process of reconciliation that He started.

Vlooi pleads with all parents to never stop praying for their children’s relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. He believes it was his mother’s prayers for him before she died that helped bring him back into relationship with his Holy Father.

Now, Vlooi is determined to glorify God and spread the word of His grace on the 500km “Celebration Journey” back to KMMC this year.

“I still cry from joy when I experience God’s will at work and witness His glory. His word is my compass and I am walking to extend His word to others along the road to KMMC 2014.”

Vlooi will be taking up a cross on his back that he will carry in worship of his Saviour Jesus Christ while walking to his own place of sanctification in the Karoo.

He reminds us that God makes use of ordinary people, like you and I, to take His good news of salvation out into the world.

That is why Romans 10:15  says, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”

noel1South Africa’s newest Christian political party, Kingdom Governance Movement, led by former ANC senior provincial leader, Mkhangeli Matomela, held its 2014 Elections Manifesto Launch in Butterworth on Saturday (March 29). Noel Ngesi (right), a founding member of the KGM Political Domain, sent us this Special Report on the launch.

It’s Saturday morning the 29th of March 2014, the time is about 10 am in the morning. The start is very slow in Butterworth where the new kid on the South African political arena, the Kingdom Governance Movement (KGM) is about to launch its 2014 Elections Manifesto.  The citizens are gradually waking up to the sunny morning and await with high expectation, for the start of the long-awaited occasion at the local two thousand seat recreation hall.

About a hundred metres away, the KGM Leadership arrives at the beautifully decorated venue where the press conference is to be held. Tantalising gospel music welcomes all, as the supporters begin to trickle in to be part of the press conference audience. About six journalists arrive from press and radio media houses and begin to collaborate together with the technical crew and the house photographer, setting up and getting ready for the conference.

Down at the main venue where all will eventually converge to start the event, some members of KGM comprising the provincial and district leadership finalise the venue preparations.  Here too, the sound technical crew is putting final touches to the audio setup in preparation for the worship and entertainment groups that are on contract for the day.  It’s about eleven o’clock and private cars, vans, microbuses and buses are arriving at the main venue in large numbers. Droves of people are roaming the area and are evidently waiting for the leadership to finish the press conference that eventually started a half an hour ago, and move to the main venue to start with the programme of the day.

Worship starts at eleven thirty and all gear changes colours into yellow, green and white T-shirts and some wearing white caps, all with the logo and varying strap-lines of the movement that include: SOUTH AFRICA BACK TO GOD, STOP SATANISM AND CORRUPTION, PLACE GOD AT THE CENTRE OF THE NATION, RESTORE THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, ERADICATE POVERTY, UNEMPLOYMENT AND INEQUALITY, and BUILD VALUES-BASED SOCIETY, CHARTER OF VALUES AND CONSTITUTION.

Excitement intensifies and the singing goes wild at about twelve noon as the long-awaited leadership, members of the media and the conference audience begin to move towards  the main venue, led by the Presidential motorcade. More crowds arrive in buses and from the neighbourhood, singing peaceful freedom songs. The motorcade stops at the side entrance of the hall and the passengers alight, the supporters go wild, evidently pleased to see their leaders. The guard-of-honour is formed and the leadership walk through into the hall and onto the well-decorated and arranged stage. The morning session Master Of Ceremony keeps the vibe going for the next 30 minutes and hands over to the MC for the programme, the Secretary General of the Movement, Pastor Sipho Mengezeleli.

The main programme starts at 13:00 and the introductions inform that supporters, leaders and members have come from different provinces and different parts on the country to attend the launch. The hall is fast filling up and at about 13:45 the SABC News TV Crew arrives and sets up in the at the chock-a-block venue. Speakers coming from different structures of the movement, leaders of various churches, organisations and institutions begin to deliver their messages of support and encouragement. The occasion is characterised by explosive Gospel singing and vigourous dancing.

Eventually at about 14:30, the main speaker, the President of the KGM, The Honourable Mr Mkangeli Matomela, is introduced by his Deputy President, Apostle Stage Stage. He takes the stage and delivers the Elections Manifesto which gets the crowd up on its feet and running excitedly around the hall. The programme is wrapped up at 15:00 and the leadership go outside to be interviewed by SABC TV News before enjoying a well prepared meal in the dining hall.

Several issues stood out in both the morning press conference and the 20 minutes session with the SABC in the afternoon. Journalists wanted to know the KGM’s position on:

1. Removal of parental discipline over children

Mkhangeli Matomela’s summarised response: The ANC led government has been applying the Alice Bailey (New Age) 10 Point Charter without the mandate of the people of South Africa. This clashes with the values upon which the very ruling party was founded, not to mention the fact that these points are not contained in the manifesto of the ANC, nor is the implementation thereof known by its very members. Where did Bathabile Dlamini get the mandate to stop parents from spanking their children in love? Matomela said he once asked the ANC Secretary General if he knew anything about the Alice Bailey 10 Point Charter and he responded that he knew nothing about it.

Bottom line, it is unacceptable that government has implemented the elements of this satanic charter undemocratically, and government must reject the anti-Christ agenda by the secret societies, with the United States of America and the United Nations championing this agenda. KGM will not rest until this satanic agenda is exposed completely and finally done-away with.

Twelve-year-olds’ right to be sexually-active

Mkhangeli Matomela’s summarised response: It is absurd that a 12-year-old cannot vote as a minor and yet a bill is about to be published that 12-year-olds can have sex and that this is their constitutional right that not even their parents can interfere with. Government is preparing our children for sex  work. They can also abort without the permission of the parent, it is their constitutional right. If the ANC government continues applying these ills in South African society, its reign is on the line. KGM has positioned itself as an alternative government, not opposing any political party. Should the ANC government continue with this autocratic governance, KGM is gearing itself as the movement to take over the reign from the ANC – led government in 2019 at the latest.

3. The Nkandla scandal and lastly

Mkhangeli Matomela’s summarised response: KGM’s stand is that if the President is guilty of benefitting himself, together with his family, inappropriately from public money spent to enhance Nkandla, he must first pay back the money to the last cent, thereafter the ANC as the ruling party, must give us a new President. Matomela said this is however not KGM’s focus. The Nkandla issue is a result of the implementation of the antichrist agenda to destroy this country through corruption, amongst other ills. If we focus on rejecting  and nullifying this satanic agenda, all things shall work well for our land.

4. Funding: Who funds KGM?

Mkhangeli Matomela’s summarised response: So far KGM has been financed by its leadership and some members. This has not been easy and we feel that new political parties are not fairly supported financially by government, for them to be able to contest elections. Funding comes only after a party gains some seats in Parliament. This matter must be looked into going forward.

The day was over at about 16:30 and we all parted ways to go and start preparing for an intensive marketing and electioneering drive.
